Quick Guide to Renting a Scooter In Chiang Mai

Firstly, do you need a license to rent a scooter?

The short answer is no, you can rent a scooter in Thailand without a valid license. However, to be legally allowed to drive, you require an International or Thai License and will forfeit any collision insurance if you do not have one. You are, however, still entitled to the medical cover that comes with all registered vehicles in Thailand.

Secondly, what scooter is right for you?

6ft (1.8m) or taller people will probably find most of the 125cc or smaller scooters a little uncomfortable. I would recommend getting something in the 150+cc range for a more comfortable ride.

If you’re shorter person, then the 110 to 125cc range should be comfortable for you. If you want a bit more power , there are a few scooters like the Aerox 155 or Click 160 that have plenty of power but are still nimble.

Would to like to travel to the surrounding areas, such as Pai or Chiang Rai? Consider upgrading to a 150+cc scooter. They will have the extra power you need to tackle the bigger hills and also allow you to maintain a higher speed on the highways. If you are an experienced rider and can afford the extra cost, the 300+cc range of scooters will make for a very enjoyable and comfortable ride.
