Renting a Scooter Without a License in Thailand

In order to legally ride a scooter in Thailand, you are required to have either an international or Thai license (certain Asian countries are exempt). However rental companies are not required to check this and most of them don’t. I am in no way condoning riding without a license; however, if you choose to do so, it is important to be properly informed of the risks.

No Insurance: If you do not have a valid license, then insurance companies will not pay out if you have an accident. You will, however, still be entitled to the medical insurance that comes with all registered vehicles in Thailand.

Police Stops: There are many police stops around that specifically stop and check foreigners’ licenses. So if you’re renting a scooter in a tourist area like Chiang Mai  you will quite likely be stopped. If you do not have a valid international license, you will have to pay a fine of around 500 – 1000 baht. You will then be sent on your way. Make sure you keep the receipt so that if you are stopped again, you can show them.

Accidents: If you have an accident involving another vehicle, you may be required to pay a fine if you are deemed to be at fault. If they check your license, there could be an additional fine if you do not have a license. In the case that someone is seriously injured, you could face additional penalties for not having a license.

Finally, I would highly recommend getting an international license before coming to Thailand. If you would prefer to get a Thai license, there are driving schools that will help you to do so. In Chiang Mai, there is a school that provides a 2-day course for around 1000 baht that will help you get a license and provide some valuable skills to inexperienced riders.
